Its been awhile!

Yes it has, and I apologise, been lazy and have not been feeling up to updating for the past month ++.
Anyway yo summarize, we finished 8th in the Sporting Light League tournament out of 12 teams. We also participated in MWS but we did not manage to qualify for the semi-finals as only the top 2 teams in the 2 groups got through. I believe we were 3rd or 4th in the group of 7 teams.
Would like to thank all players who participated in all the games!! There might not be games for awhile as I am taking up a coaching in october (which runs on sats and sun) for 3 weeks, and after that people will be having exams, church will have camps and activities etc. I will try to arrange a friendly maybe somewhere in november after the exams end. Please bear with the break, maybe take it as a good rest of sorts :) But if anyone wants to look for opponents and have a friendly or something, please by all means go ahead!

Hoping to start abit of trainnings and practices but that would probably be start of next year, I will also need some financial support, especially those who have not paid me for the jerseys and tournament etc.
On that note, I have got your MISSING SHORTS!! Actually not really haha, I bought replacements. Please collect your socks as well. For those in church, please collect if you have not, for those not from Kum Yan, I'll pass them to you as and when I can or when I see you (hopefully).

Hi,
Not gonna be long.
Basically we played KK Sabah. Lost 7-2. We had 11 players.
Grats to Dinesh and Farhan ( from Jurgen's sat team) for scoring the goals, especially Farhan's Beckham-look-alike screamer from just after the half way line, catching the keeper off his line and scoring a really nice long chip.
Not going to elaborate more. But want to say thanks to all who came down, especially to those we called at the last min, and those who played despite injuries.

Just to update you guys, next 2 games we'll be playing the top 2 teams of the league. I'll still sms to ask if you're available. The 2nd game will actually be played on 8th August because 9th August is on sunday and its National Day. I know afew players will not be available on 8th cause we have prior arrangements already, but we'll see.

Also lastly. I need to find out who's interested to play MWS. I need to know BY THIS WEEK!!

Its a little late i know hehe.
We'll be playing KK Sabah. If some of you remember, we played them quite awhile ago before the league started at yishun field. We lost 4-2 that time.
This time round, we'll be using afew guest players, as many of our registered players are injuried, and a handful are going to watch the Liverpool match. Thankfully the organisers understand because alot of teams couldnt play for that reason, so he allowed us to field more un-registered players. We'll be playing at Bedok Green Secondary School 5pm. Cya then!

Hey all,
will do the match report alittle later, going out soon :)
Anyway, just wanted to update that there will be NO MATCH THIS WEEK! Think afew players are alittle jaded and want to spend some time after service to catch up with people. Want to thank everyone for their part in the team. I hope we can all have a good rest this week and catch up with people etc.

Really hope everyone can persevere on with me through this league till around september. The past few games were kinda tough with lack of certain positions or lack of subs etc, and we had to switch players around to cover. With that said, I stick by what I set out to do in the beginning, and thats to use whoever we have available, if players really can't play, its ok! But if you can, please do!

Just a last update. MWS is on the 29th of August. Its on a saturday at AR-JAS sports centre, somewhere in jurong/tuas area. I'd like to open it to SSC players first to see who's interested before I look for players outside of the team. Something I forsee is that, there might be a league match on sunday as well, and since we've played the least games in the entire league, I'm not sure if we can postpone that match, BUT we'll see. Now I'd just like to confirm players for MWS, I think we've grown quite attached to this tournament and would like to get to the finals again. So please sign up with me ASAP! Registration is for 15 players, I believe its 9 a-side, because its the same venue as last year and I'd guess the number of players will be the same. Each team needs to pay $400, which means >$20 per player, but if you would like to play, please don't worry about the money first, just let me know you want to play but may have problems paying the money and we'll try to sort it out.

Next match will be played on Sunday 12th July.
Venue is Pasir Ris Crest Secondary school. It is unlikely the venue will have a change as AYG is over and I don't see any reason for the field to be taken back. Game's at 5pm. Players reading this, if you havn't replied my SMS, REPLY NOWWWWW!!!!! I got lotsa quick replies however, :) thank you so much for those quick replies hehe.

I will SMS later in the week those who'll be playing in sunday's match, I need to get a rough idea who's able to play first. Look out for it.

Hello,
An update on 2 matches played in the last 2 weeks.
As posted earlier, we got a good trashing of 9-2 the week before, the score was 3-0 to them at half time. The unfortunate keeper to have 9 goals conceded to his name would be yours truly, even Jeremy Chua our resident no.1 hasnt let in that many goals in 4 games. Speaking of which and side tracking alittle, we want to thank Jeremy for his many contributions, without whom we might not be in the position we are in today. We also want to wish him well and send him off as he begins his journey to serve our country. We will see him soon, and if can somehow get fitter than he already is, WOW haha, thats how fit he is. Anyway yes he will sorely be missed, and in the mean-time, not any less of a keeper, we will have Benjamin Fong, who's been working tirelessly in defense for us for most of our games to take over the GK reins. I have no doubts of his abilities and I look forward to helping him build a wall in defense. Back to the match report, the opponents were very much the better team, more well organized, fitter, and they have probably played with each other for a long time based on their really fluent passing. We can argue that we could've matched them if we had a proper keeper and more key players present, but fact is that at the end of the day we got beat. From day 1, my philosophy for the team is, who-ever we can get in the team, we'll make do, there are obvious players we seem to depend on, if they can play great, but if not we'll still go on and do our best. Credit to the opponents though, their goals arent sloppy ones. There were 2 I distinctively remember, because they were rocketed from just outside the penalty box, and as tall as I am, couldn't reach up to parry it over, maybe I jumped too late I guess. But they were pretty well struck. There were mis-communications in defense which led to afew goals as well, and it didn't help that they split our defense with really well laid through balls.
It wasn't all glum for team SSC. We actually managed to threaten and hold the opponents for a good 15-20mins in the first half. It wasn't until the first goal that the flood gates opened and the team found it difficult to recover. I can't remember at which point we pulled back a goal, but it was somewhere in the 2nd half, Dinesh helped pulled a goal back, and we all hoped it would somehow jolt us all into pressing them back. But I remember it wasn't before long that they scored at least 1 or 2 more, before Dinesh scored another to try to salvage the situation. All in all, it was a match many of us want to forget, at least I do haha. But it also serves as a reminder that the league has teams that are pretty good, and we have not even played the top 2 teams. I'm not saying we will definately lose, but I will also say, we shouldnt get scared or complacent no matter who we play. I'm proud of where we've come, I see certain changes in team attitude, we work hard and we encourage, wouldn't want it any other way. I think we're off to a good start in terms of laying the foundations of how we want to build our team, we're still very unpolished, and still very raw in terms of being a team to be reckoned with, but we're getting there, we're doing good :)

Want to thank them all for their hard work and despite the loss, we tried and we pushed but, we really lost to a good team. Special thanks to Jeremy Kwok and Derek Ong to come help us out in our lack of players. They really put in their all and I sincerely appreciate it, hopefully they'll play for us again hahaha.

Just this past sunday, we played another match, with a very different outcome, and with a proper keeper this time, in fact we had all 3 available keepers turn up, 4 if you include the poor soul who let in 9 goals the previous week, HAHAHA!! Jeremy was in goal, Ben Fong was in defense and Edward was our winger. The day did not start off too well however. Because of the AYG or some other reason, the Singapore Sports Council, also known as SSC (but not saturday soccer club hahaha) took back the fields originally used for our matches, thus we played at a normal field which is not astro turf. We played at Blk 367 Yishun Ring road, which we played before against, co-incidentally, one of the teams thats also in the league we're in, the Sabah team A.K.A. KK United. That friendly match ended in our loss of 4-2. I remember that that pitch was really bad as it had rained heavily and it was a mud bath. So bearing that bad memory, I was alittle worried about the pitch conditions. But I was re-assured by some players who played on the same pitch on saturday that the field is actually quite good and well taken care of by groundsmen, as long as it did not rain. Well, what would you know, on sunday, it didn't just rain, it POURED!! It was so heavy that on our way over driving on the CTE, I could barely see 200m ahead of me. Many players called to see if the game was still on, and I also called the organisers to see if the game will be called, of course remembering the last time we played on the field, we ALL wanted the game called haha. But as the official couldn't be reached, probably because he was refereeing a game currently going on, the organisers replied that the game should still go on until the official says otherwise. Thus we made our way down.
Once at the venue, the referee actually mentioned he would probably call the game off as the pitch was sorta water-logged, imagine our joy. However, the other team actually mentioned they did not mind playing, since they've already been warming up and they were all suited up and all. I seriously thought they must be crazy to want to play on a muddy water-logged pitch. Some of our players went on the field to check it out, and in the end, even up till now, I dont know how we came to the conclusion to play the game -.-"
So game on, we had 12 players who came down for the game.

Its kinda funny because I remember how everyone was dreading playing on that field, and how we were skeptical that the game would continue, we joked and laughed at the void deck where we were thinking the match would be called eventually. Alas, for some strange mysterious reason we went on to play the game. It was difficult to play on the pitch, because of the water-logging situation. I remember Edward's comments after the game, how he waited for the ball when it was crossed to him, but bounced on the water and skidded away from him, so the next time he got smart and ran to anticipate the ball skidding, but instead the ball stopped dead as it landed, causing significant misery to Eddie's day hahaha. We managed to control most of the first half, and we capped it off with a goal from Jurgen who took a well placed shot to the corner of the goal from just inside the penalty box.
The 2nd half wasn't as clear cut as the first as many players started to tire, and with the lack of substitutes, we were all pushing our limits. 1 more so than others was Jared Wu, better known to us as Cong. He used to be our 30min man, first 15mins of the first half and last 15mins of the 2nd half. But in this game, he lasted the entire game. And his determination to keep to his post as a centre-back and help the team achieve its goal was apparent in his war-cry exclamations through-out the 2nd half, many would think it was to scare the opponents (and it could probably have been too), in the end it was his way of pushing himself, when he felt he couldn't run anymore. He shrugged off players like they were a fly waiting to be swatted, he was someone you did not want to mess with. But it wasn't just Cong, every single player on that pitch that day gave their all, and on a muddy, soggy, water-logged pitch, it takes twice as much energy to play in. Even our goal-keeper pulled out all stops to keep the opponents out, and he did tremendously well, I think majority of the team would agree that every game he played in, he would be a nominee for man of the match. If anyone reading this gets "bored" of how I always praise the team for how they pushed themselves to their fullest and gave it their all and think I'm just repeating myself, well, I am because its true, and if you don't believe, come see for yourself. Every player, no matter how fit or unfit gave 150% effort. You can argue that all teams do that, and I sorta agree, but I'm looking at THIS team, SaturdaySoccerClub (SSC). I'm proud of the players and their commitment, however little the contribution I appreciate because in that little bit I see more than 100% effort. Anyway, pardon the digression, back to the match report hehe. Edward got injuried early to mid-way through the 2nd half, so we had to play with exactly 11men for the rest of the match. Jurgen then extended our lead with another goal, and with quite alot of luck. Not many people know the exact sequence of events that led to the goal. Jurgen took a chance at a long range shot from outside the penalty box, it appeared that the keeper had a good clean grasp of the ball, so majority of us turned around, and just as we turned back we suddenly see the keeper scrambling to keep the ball out of the goal. It appeared that the keeper had not gotten a clean grasp of the ball, but instead caught but let the ball slip and it somehow bounced into the goal, and like I said I don't know how it happened, but 22 stunned players looked at the referee to see what the decision was, GOAL!!!!!! Hahaha, imagine our surprise, but we'll take it anyhow. The last 15mins or so was quite a test for the defense as everyone was tired, and the opponents still seem to be able to push forward, with 1 of the strikers an obvious danger-man because of his speed. It was in the last 10mins that the opponents had a foul given to them at the edge of SSC's penalty box, by this time, the field was almost in darkness with little bits of light coming from nearby HDBs and whatever little ray of sunlight that was left. The opponents took a direct driver into the bottom corner of the net and scored the goal, Jeremy was finally beaten. But SSC held on till the end to take the 2-1 win. Great game guys.

Sorry for the extremely long post, especially since its 2 match reports haha, and also seemed very EMO, but I really am proud and thankful for all the players, friend's of players who've come to help us out and not forgetting the girls who've come to support us and tolerate our soccer talk haha. Lastly I don't want to forget KumYan Methodist Church, they've graciously let us use the church van and let us go back to church to bathe after the game and all. I am really hoping that we can grow to become better players and also to be able to bring our friends and even train younger ones soon in the future, in the meantime, we need training ourselves hahahaha!!! Just got a message that sports council has taken back the field at Pasir ris, most likely for AYG. Thus we've been scheduled to play at Yishun.

Next match is on sunday 5th July 2009. Venue is different however, and might well be a normal grass field pitch. I think it is due to the AYG thats going on, they probably cancelled all booking to accommodate the event, but I dont know the real reason.

If you're wondering why I did not do a match report before this, well to keep it short we lost 9-2. As much as I'll admit we were the weaker team, but my pride's taken a real beating, so give me some time and i'll try to write something soon. On a brighter note, Dinesh has kept up his scoring streak by scoring both goals. But just to emphasize, the team still did their best! The match just showed us what a team can do when they've played together long enough, plus being fit helps lots too! We've all just come back from a break, some are rusty etc, but lets pick up the pieces and come back with a vengeance this weekend!! Reply the SMS ASAP please!! If no SMS sent out by wednesday, call/sms me.

update!!!

Hello!!
sorry i've been MIA.. just moved house and internet was not up.. just went to get my wireless PCI card so I got wireless now :)

anyway.. i know the last post said there would be internal matches played, but on both occasions we did not have enough people to form 2 teams, so I was told. And my apologies for not updating as and when I received the information. I would've liked to have some training sessions as well, but I was quite busy with exams and moving house and church camp for a good 3 weeks of June, so I couldn't really get down to planning anything.

Well, matches are gonna start this coming sunday 28th June. Alot of people seem to be un-available, however, we should still be able to get about 11-13 people. I believe our opponents are FC Zenith. Hope you guys are still football crazy enough to finish off the season :) The season should end somewhere in September I believe, we've got like 7 more games to play. Expect to have a game almost every week, hopefully with 30 registered players, we can rotate around, and for those who havn't been playing much, my apologies, I'll try to put in more games for you :) key word being "TRY" hehe. Might join MWS if there is still the MWS tourney, but we'll see.

Lastly for now. Please start paying up for the jerseys and tournament if you have not done so already. I apologise for the lousy admin job I've been doing so far, I've lost our shorts and some players havn't gotten their jerseys, and many other things. I seek your patience, understanding and co-operation, I'm learning as I go and hope we can all chip in to achieve our goal of making SSC a place for fun and serious football. OWE $$$$$ PAY $$$$$$!!!!! Hee!!
Oh and about the shorts, I'll settle it, and will try to get it done soon. Anyone got good lobang for soccer shorts suppliers? intro me pls!

Internal Matches coming up

Hey guys,
just a quick update since I havn't been doing so since the last match update.
Afew of the guys are back from overseas, namely Prav, Bas and soon, Cheeky. Not sure if anyone else is back, if you are, let me know ya :) Either through the blog or come look for me in church or however you may know me. Bas and Cheeks won't be back home for long, maybe 2weeks to 3weeks or so. So Bas is trying to arrange for some internal matches just to kick ball abit. This week 1st-7th June is still a rest week, the first internal match will probably be on the 13th, which is a SATURDAY morning. Will update on venue and timing, although timing is likely to be morning like we used to play our friendlies. As for venue, we're trying to get astro turf if possible, and if we do, please be prepared to pay alittle more, it shouldn't be more than $10 per person I'M GUESSING!!!
Basically internal matches for those who've not played in any, we'll play within our own team of players, you'd probably see some past players who used to play for us as well (maybe), and hopefully some new players and friends too. Anyway, will let you all know of any updates as soon as I can. My exams end next tuesday 9th June 2009, so any updates will probably be done after that, but you will probably receive calls from Bas or Jurgen about your availability for the internal matches (yes matchES cause there will be 2 internal matches in 2 weeks).

Match report 17 May 2009

Game against Frolic.
Started the match in abit of a disarray as several players had to rush down after church service. But we managed to start with a make-shift line up. If I recall, Hilmann and Ian Tan were playing centre back, hehe. But as players started arriving and warmed up, afew substitutions were made. It was a fairly even-paced match, with time to look up and play the ball. SSC took the lead in the first half, with an assist from Jason Wong to set up Dinesh for his 4th goal in as many games. A neatly laid pass from the left to Dinesh who was in the 6 yard box, all ready to pounce, and he duly delivered by slotting home with his in-step. 1-0 half-time.
Frolic started the 2nd half strong, and pushed for an equalizer, but SSC maintained a solid shape all-round and kept the opponents at bay, keeping keeper Edward as un-occupied as much as possible. SSC then extended their lead when Jiahao trotted up to add some aerial power for a corner. However it wasn't his head that helped get the goal, but a certain part of his body which I can only mention, reminded many of a certain Argentine who scored with the same part during a world cup finals. For those who don't know what part of his body or do not know who the Argentine is, ask around :) 2-0 to SSC. With a surprising number of player turn-up, the team was rotated as much as possible to give everyone sufficient playing time without de-stablizing the team too much like we did in the very first match. SSC were given a scare when the opponents took a well taken chance, the player struck the ball with fury, but Edward managed to tip the ball just enough for it to rattle the crossbar, that was probably the opponents best and closest chance. SSC held on to keep their first clean sheet of the league! Congrats guys!!

Reminder to all the players to please pay up for Jerseys or for the league or for both.
The 2nd scheduled payment for the league is due soon, and payment for the Jerseys need to be settled soon as well. So please do pay the money to me asap. You can either pay me in cash in person or transfer the money to my bank account.

I am also keeping a log of accounts, to track money coming in and going out for accountability sake. Reason for it all, is that SSC will continue for years to come, and hopefully in the near future we can have a small fund to pay for equipments, booking of fields etc, future jerseys, and even a get-together with award ceremony :) especially since we're in a league! So look forward to it.

Match report 10th May 2009

I am most pleased to report that SSC has recorded their first win of Sporting Light League. In an exciting and hard fought battle, SSC really worked very hard to ensure Teban Thunder did not manage to win their third straight game.
The game started out with SSC still trying to gain confidence in themselves and shrug off previous losses. It was also a trying time for the team to concentrate on playing their own game and letting the referee do his job. Many players tried to hold their comments to themselves and the team urged one another on to play on the game until a whistle was heard, although given, there were still acouple of incidences where "Ref Foul" were heard.
It didn't help the team's confidence much when team Teban, still brimming with confidence from their 2 previous wins, took an early lead with a thunderous (no pun intended) shot that rifled pass Jeremy from just alittle over the 6 yard box, a well taken shot which would've been difficult for any keeper to save. But the team kept their heads high, and kept enthusiasm high as well. With shouts of encouragements going all round from the sidelines to the players on the field, SSC pulled back a goal with a really well linked set-up. With Dinesh playing down the left flank, providing speed and good runs, he managed to beat the offside trap and raced down the left flank toward the baseline. Once there, he cut back to his right foot and placed an inviting low pass across goal to an oncoming and very happy recipient, in the form of Shawn Kong. The diminutive forward tapped in an easy goal to record his first goal of the season. A fine example of attacking and pouncing. The team in jubilance for pulling a goal back, but constant reminders to remind the team that the game was far from over helped to bring back focus into the team. And it wasn't long before Dinesh, provider turned scorer, to record his 3rd goal in as many games. Shouts of joy erupted from the SSC bench and players on the field as SSC takes the lead. The team maintained its good shape and form to end the half 2-1, in favour of SSC. The team continued to encourage one another, and players were communicating with one another throughout the match. Sensing the opponents need to press for goals, the team braced themselves for a tough 2nd half. The team fought tooth and nail for every ball, every player that went onto the pitch, even as substitutes, ran and chased every possible ball, tackling with maximum effort and tenacity, and all the while keeping the shape of the team and not letting the opponents gain rhythm in their play. In an attempt to try and salvage at least a point, the opponents battled extra hard in the last 10minutes of the game, and on several occasions too over-zealously, resulting in a flurry of yellow cards, mostly due to frustration in the form of flying tackles. SSC decided to solidify the defense and played with 5 in the back-line, and the tactic worked really well, as the opponents could not find a way through, let alone get a shot on target. A well earned and in my opinion a well deserved victory! Kudos to Teban Thunder for a well played game.
Special thanks to all the players and supporters who came down for the match. I was indeed pleased to see that the team did not focus on the fact that the opponents were on a winning streak, and let that distract them from playing the game, but instead, we took the game to them and proved that we have what it takes to win games even against the stronger of opponents. I hope that whichever team we may come across, be it strong or weaker teams, that we will continue to play SSC style of football and take the game to any opponent. Credit to Simon who took over tactics duty this week and helped the team to focus on our playing instead of distractions like referees and losing streaks. I know overall it is still a team effort, and I know many players and even fathers :) have contributed to help the team grow and play better. So to all the players and supporters and parents, THANK YOU for your support and guidance thus far, and we look forward to the future, that we may truly grow and become a team that supports excellence and also an outlet for people to learn and have fun.

There was however, 1 downside to the match I forgot to mention, we got a yellow card during the match, and it becomes the 5th of the league, therefore we have been deducted 1 extra point (5 yellow cards = 1 demerit point, 1 red = 1 demerit point). BUT we still have ONE POINT after minus-ing the 2 demerit points (we had a red card in the first match)!!! And we're currently 10th out of 13th, meaning we're out of the bottom!! Huzzah!!
Next match is on 17th May 2009, at Temasek Secondary (the place we played our first match) @ 5pm. Cyaaaaa then!!

Match Report for 3rd May 2009

Heyo!!
We played against Jubilee, a team thought to be relatively weak, due to their position on the league table, and their scores from 2 previous matches.

Playing a hard fought match, and with pressure to win our first match of the league, the players tried hard, and were rewarded for their efforts after SSC were awarded a penalty mid-way through the 1st half. Dinesh calmly and cooly converted the spot kick. However, the celebrations were short-lived, as the opponents pulled 1 back within 5mins. Seen by many as an attempted cross, the ball managed to catch the keeper off his line and dipped behind him into the goal, although many would call it a fluke, but a fluke goal is still a goal unfortunately, 1-1. The score stood at half time.
SSC began the 2nd half searching for the elusive 2nd goal to take the lead again, however it did not come, but instead SSC found themselves under pressure many-a-times and were finally caught on a counter-attack, committing players forward, and the back-line tiring with each chase, the opponents strikers took advantage of the fitness and speed to score not 1, but 2 goals in the 2nd half. It could well have been more, if not for the ever-present Jeremy in goal and some good interceptions by left back Jason. Captain Ian Tan tried to motivate the team and push them, he tried to lead by example, pushing through his exhaustion, he chased down every ball and went in hard for tackles. The team tried to respond but were beaten by the sheer fitness of the other team. SSC did come close to pulling 1 back, a cross goal effort by Dinesh saw the ball hit the post but the ball did not go into the net.
The team tried their hardest and was apparent as many bemoaned their missed opportunities. But as with most football matches, you win some and you lose some, just hope that we win some soon :) hahaha. Keep your heads up SSC, take off the pressure and enjoy the game!! Seems like every match we're learning something, and I think its great. Lets keep striving to improve our game. The refereeing of the match was left wanting once again, many questionable calls in many areas, but SSC managed to keep their head in the game and played on as best as they could and not calling against the referee. The captain and manager did go over to talk to the referee and the league's representative, who was present at the match, after the game ended, to point out that our players do not seem to get enough protection, among other things. In any case, we'll leave the decisions up to the committee to decide, and we'll continue to play our game.
After scaring the league with our 4 yellow cards and 1 red card in the first match, we actually managed to keep a relatively clean game and ended with no cards at all after the 2nd game.

Our next match is at First Toa Payoh Secondary School once again, also at 5pm. This time we're playing against Teban Thunder. Lets keep focus and push on to try and win the match! Cya Sunday!

P.s.
By the way, there will be a break of 3 weeks in June, because a good majority are church teams and many churches will be having camps and stuff in June, therefore there will be a break from 6th June till 21st June. Games will resume on 27th June. Also there is a captains ball friendly at KumYan Methodist Church on the 26th of May, so there will not be a match on the 26th of May either. Have a good break/rest!

Just a footnote. Regarding whatever happened at the last match, I hope we can put that behind us and not be distracted especially if we get the same referee to officiate our games. I admit it won't be easy especially if we get blown against unfairly again, but as sportsmen, keep our shoutings and discontentment to ourselves first, after the match has ended, DO NOT APPROACH the referee on your own, come talk to me or the captain. We will sort it out with the referee or the league committee. Shouting at the referee is something I always do, so I too need to watch out. Lets play our own game and not get distracted. A good reminder from Uncle Dennis, as well as certain other players, lets be a good testiment to those watching!

First Match ends in defeat and not without drama!!

And the first match of the season for SSC in the Sporting Light League began today at 5pm at Temasek Secondary School. Facing team SGX who won their first game the week before.
18 members of SSC made their way down and suited up to do battle. The starting 11 consisted of Jeremy Chua (GK), Jiahao and Alvin Hoi (centre-backs), Jason and Marvin (wing-backs), Hilmann and Ian Tan (centre-mid), Kang Yang and Luke (left and right wings), Jurgen (Attacking-mid) and Dinesh (striker). On the bench we had players like, Lionel, Eduard, Uncle Keith, Benjamin Fong, Sean Tan, Ken Phua, Simon Lim and Sam Cho.
We started the half strongly and it wasnt long before Dinesh finished off some brilliant passing from the team, the final assist coming from a nicely laid through-pass from Jurgen. The ball was slotted through 2 defenders to the waiting Dinesh who only needed to turn and lay a nicely placed shot from the right side of the box into the bottom-left corner of the goal. The team stayed strong as a unit and kept the opponents at bay with the help of substitutes Simon Lim and Benjamin Fong who came in midway through the half, ending the first half 1-0.
SSC started the second half strongly with Lionel in for Jason at the half. It was not long before SSC got their 2nd goal for their persistent efforts through a trip on Sean Tan in the penalty box. Though there were protests from the opposition, the referee deemed it a foul committed in the box and pointed duly to the spot. Up stepped the very player who was fouled, and with calm and cool composure (or so he tried hehehe), he slotted the ball home towards the keepers bottom right, leaving the keeper stranded at his spot. At that the manager decided to replace several players to keep fresh legs on the field, and 4 substitutions were made all at once. (The tournament allows for flying substitutions). On came Eduard, Sam Cho, Uncle Keith and Ken Phua. The game intensified as the opponents came wave after wave to try and break SSC's defensive barrier. And they finally managed to get their first goal mid way through the 2nd half, with a misjudged defensive header back to the keeper, bouncing out of the keepers reach, the ball slowly bounced its happy self into the back of the net. OWN GOAL! It wasn't too long after before they managed to score a second goal, and at that more changes were made to the line-up to try to stabilize the team. Several key position players started to tire and players had to be adjusted and play out of positions, a decision regretfully made by the manager. The instability proved to be the downfall in the match in which the opponents managed to score the winning goal.
Several key incidences marred the match and mis-understandings occurred. It is my firm belief the team played their hardest, and though there were many dubious calls by the referee towards the end of the match, and 1 call that might have helped the opponents score their winning goal, but in the end, it was a match for SSC to lose for lapse of concentration and for the most part, tactical errors by the manager. I am still proud of the way the team played, we fought hard and had tonnes of passion, sometimes too much passion that it over-boiled. But I applaud the efforts of every team member and their contribution, whether big or small, because I see our standard of play getting better with each passing game. I do however apologise for losing my cool towards the end of the match at the referee, and I believe the other players who also lost their cool know that we are better than that. In any case, well done guys, no worries, it is just the first match, we will definitely come back stronger and as better players!
Next game is on Sunday 3rd of May against Jubilee at 5pm at First Toa Payoh Secondary School. Get ready for it!!

Goals and Visions for SSC

Something I shared about at a meeting on sunday.
From my understanding, Saturdaysoccerclub (SSC) was formed because a group of guys from KumYan really loves to play soccer, and opportunities after everyone graduated from school are limited because there's no more "school team". And in KY, we always had a group of guys playing soccer anyways, so afew guys came together and formed this team. Over the years, we've had players come and go, be it because of overseas studies or players going back to their home country etc. Leadership of the team has also been handed over afew times, and most recently to me from Bas and Shawn Kong, both of whom went to Australia for studies and army respectively, that was somewhere mid of 2008.

At the beginning of 2009, I talked to Jurgen Ho about helping me out in 'running' SSC. Since then we've been constantly talking about the team and how we can improve. Recently, I talked to a good friend and I got this insight from him, that to really enjoy a good game of soccer, tactics and trainning are important, and that coming together to just play friendlies and making the same 'mistakes'/errors for every game is frustrating for many. Of course on the "good" days when we play weaker opponents, we can boast of our win, but when we play teams like the one we played last saturday against the Sabah team (who probably plays regularly on sundays), we get humbled.

Thus, I thought about it and came up with some goals and visions for SSC. Things I am hoping that we can achieve, also something we can strive for perhaps?
I love the fact that we can always invite friends, classmates, relatives, colleges etc to come join us in a friendly game. But at the same time, some players have reflected to me, and I see it too, that we are mostly at the age where players peak in their playing, which is around 26-28, and many of us want to improve and play better football. There is also a group of players who would like to keep soccer as a casual sport.
Therefore, I'm currently asking and looking for players who wish to improve their game by becoming "core" players of the team. These players are required to commit their saturday mornings to games/trainings etc. Of course when circumstances arise where they aren't able to come down, all they need to do on their part is inform Jurgen or myself. As of now, there are no fines or any forms of "punishment" and I really hope we do not need to do so, we will see as we go along. These "core" players will of course get priority to play games, however there may be some games they'll sit out to rest or give other people a chance to play. Trainings will also be a requirement to attend, and though we do not have professional coaches, many of us do come from teams previously and have some sort of training knowledge, so whatever we know, we'll share and train together. I do not foresee many people being able to commit to being a "core" member, especially at this early stage, but with whatever numbers we get, we will work with and hopefully all learn together and share with one another our experiences!
I have not forgotten about casual players and friends, relatives, colleges etc of players who would like to come join us for some friendly fun. Jurgen and myself will still continue to contact everyone whenever there is a match to play or tournament that comes up. And I do hope to have all your support in building this team to not just become better soccer players, but that this will be a team where we can all have fun and have fellowship with one another.

The goals and visions may not be the clearest or to some it may be alittle short-sighted (or lack of long-term goals), but I hope this is a start we can all work towards, and hopefully soon we can have more goals and in-depth visions. Hope to have your support!! Thanks and God Bless!!

Updates!!

Hello!
Just wanted to give some updates since my last one.
We've played 2 matches since then. One against some old boys of Ang Mo Kio Sec I believe, or so I was told. That game ended 0-0. A game we probably should've won, but poor finishing was our weakness for that game. Tany had several first time shots but they all went wide, but kudos for trying, good efforts. Defensively we managed to limit them to afew long shots, and having Ben Fong as our shot stopper helped alot. I can't really remember much of that game however, but I do remember we did well despite the lack of goals.
The other match we played was just the weekend that passed. Incidently also a team joining the Sporting Light League that we're participating. They are a relatively strong team in terms of their passing, shooting and speed, in short, they're pretty good haha. We played on one of the worst pitches I've played on thus far, one of them at least. Apparently it rained earlier in the day or the day before. The centre area from one side to the other side was like a mud pool, I was soooo afraid I'd twist my ankle (which I almost did). But credit to the other team, their passing was really defense spliting and they were really fast which gave the defense and midfielders a real headache. By the end of the first half we were down 3-0. We knew we had to play higher up to minimize their midfielders control and giving them less time on the ball, but our defense lacked the speed and stamina. On came Ben Fong who volunteered the central defender's role. That marked a significant change to the game. We played a high line and when they used the long ball tactic, we had Ben chase and slow the player down while the rest of us try to get back. Ben's energy and encouragement really pushed the team to work harder. The difference in energy in the team was evident. Everyone worked hard, ran hard and kept them from shooting as much as they did in the first half. I firmly believe this team we played opened our eyes to see the difference in standard of football at different levels. To be honest, if we played the way we did in the 2nd half for the entire game, I do believe we could've actually won it, provided we don't faint by then haha! But that really tells you how hard the team worked in the 2nd half, we scored 2 and they scored 1, final score for the day was 4-2, another defeat. It has been awhile since we last won a game, but I don't think its because we aren't good enough, in fact we could've been winning, but as far as I remember, we lost afew due to lack of players in a game and missed opportunities. This last game we played has for me at least, opened my eyes to another tactic of playing the game, they were quick, had lots of off-the-ball movement, the game required a fast centre back, which we kinda never had to use before. Good experience for me. I believe many of the players learnt new things too, like spreading out and using the flanks, pressuring the opposition and not giving them time and space to look up etc.
That last game also saw the welcoming of Uncle Keith to the team, debut and he did tremendously well at right back, with 100% commitment in his sliding tackles. Also Uncle Dennis who played his debut at the Ang Mo Kio match. I want to mention everyone who played in the last game because I believe they should all be recognised for the tremendous effort running around and playing with such tenacity, a different level of play then we've ever played before in my honest opinion.

Just an update on Sporting Light League. League will commence this weekend, but we postponed our match because its YC 10th Anniversary!! YAY!! We welcome one and all to come join us to celebrate and see the faithfulness of God in the lives of the ministry we call Youth Connection! Therefore, our first match will be on 26th April 2009, 5pm at Temasek Sec!! We will be getting a new set of jerseys as many do not have the red set we are currently wearing. Numbers and names are to be printed on the jersey as well. Thus players numbers are being chosen at the moment. Our dear players overseas, I do need you to let me know what numbers you guys would like, UNFORTUNATELY though, some numbers have already been taken because we held a meeting last sunday, and priority was given to them to choose their numbers. However, no number is set as yet, except for number 14, which many of us agreed to let Kang Yang take over his brother's old number. Therefore other than 14, please let me know, either by email or by the chatbox on this webbie which numbers you'd like, please state your top 4 choices. If you really really really want a number that has already been taken, I'll let you know who asked for that number and you can discuss with that player, just let me know what the agreement is afterwards.

Update on 2 matches played in the past 2 weeks!

Hello,
Sorry I havn't been updating. Been kinda lazy and updating losses aren't my cup of tea.
Thats right, in 2 consecutive weeks, we played the same team and in both times, we were short on players.
2 weeks ago, we played with 9 players, the other team graciously loaned us 1 player to bring our player tally to 10 for the first half. Half way through the first half, Jurgen re-injured his hamstring, possibly pulling a muscle or something. But he stayed on as we had no substitutes. Sean Tan rushed down from home on my request and reached at about the start of the 2nd half. By the way, I forgot to mention, we had no goalkeepers, so I stood in goal. We were down 2-0 by half time. As Sean had arrived, the other team's player went back to their team, and we continued playing with 9 1/2 men, as Jurgen was injured. We tried hard to stage a comeback, but lack of concentration and players to sub tired legs led to our downfall. We lost the game 5-2. A humbling experience. I thought we fought really hard and did pretty well despite the setbacks we've had.
Then last week we came down to play, not knowing who our opponents were, cause the referee arranges the matches for us, and again it was the same team, and again by 9am, kickoff timing, we had only 8 players this time. I don't know if the other team were happy or sad to see us again, with not enough players again! They did not loan us a player this time however, cause they had like only 3 subs. So again, with much frustration, we took to the field, but not before frantically trying to call the missing players. We played and we fought, to a pretty decent result of 1-0 in the first half, we were losing but I felt for 8 men, it was a good show. But in the mid of the first half, Jurgen again pulled his hamstring, the same hamstring. Luckily we had Jeremy Chua, our keeper back from his internship in China, in goal and not me (heng). So with 7 1/2 men we managed to keep the result at 1-0 in the first half. Into the 2nd half we went. Just as we kicked our first ball, Ken appeared and suited up to come in, 8 1/2 men :). However midway through, we let in yet another goal, 2-0. And after awhile Jurgen started to struggle, and we felt that he should rest. Luckily not too long after, Jerome (if I got your name wrong I apologise) came and we had a 9 men team. Into the last 10mins of the game, we swapped Simon (left-back) and Dinesh (very tired striker). Dinesh was running his lungs out (literally). And what would you know, even with 10mins left, we managed to pull back 1 goal, a high ball came, the keeper rushed out for it, a tall defender went for it, and Simon went for it, for some reason, Simon, being the shorter compared to the tall defender and outstretched hands of a goalkeeper, managed to get his head to the ball (I'm still not sure he knew where he was heading the ball though), the 3 players crashed, ball went over them after Simon got his head to it, bounced on the ground once before rolling into goal. GOAL!!!!! Simon made up for an open miss just 2 mins earlier. He was through on goal with just the goal keeper to beat. He came down from the left flank, with a defender meters behind him. Simon contemplated chipping the ball over the keeper who was hesitating on whether to come out or not. Simon decided that since the keeper was hesitating, that he should instead, slot it in the far corner. He tried a curler, but tired legs got the better of him, he let loose a kick, but the curler was not enough to stir the ball into goal, and the ball went wide, a huge opportunity wasted, but at least Simon made it up with a goal not too long after :) There you have it, we managed to play better this time round and kept the score, although a loss, at 2-1.
Really want to thank all that came down, and despite frustration at players who confirmed that they want to play but never showed up and not even bothering to call or apologise for over-sleeping or whatever reason, we still played well and ran tirelessly. I really hope we do not get demoralised at the lack of commitment by certain players, we're not a professional team that gets paid, thus as friends, I can only say though its an attitude that stinks (not showing up, not calling to apologise, not answering their phones when people are frantically trying to get them etcetc), but as friends, I ask that we be a gracious community and be an example to one another. Appreciate all that has been coming early, to those who came the last 2 weeks and running like crazy, to suffer defeat when we really should have won. Its ok, we'll bounce back and we'll come back stronger!!
For everyone to take note, I understand sometimes we have late nights, I myself sleep late, but when you confirm your attendance to come and play soccer, it is a promise to the team that you will show up, We're not forcing anyone to play, if you really think you cant play, tell us!! If we dont have enough players we can call the match off early, it is ok. But if you say you want to play then you should show up. Even if you wake up late, you should be responsible enough to take a cab down and not just think just because you're late already then dont bother, or if we are calling and you're still in bed, then think that since i'm late i'll just go back to sleep and not answer my phone, even if you do not hear it initially, call back once you do see it. I think more so as friends, that attitude sucks!! There are some players who are just as tired when they wake up saturday mornings, but because they've made a promise to come, they make sure they turn up. It has been very frustrating to the players that came down the past 2 weeks and this is something that needs to be addressed. Even if you rush down and appear after the game has ended, to me at least I see you have that commitment, you might get some flack from the people there, like "now then come down arh" etcetc, but at least you SHOW UP. Although I know alot of players do not visit this site anymore, but I hope those that do get the message.
My apologies to some of the players from 2 weeks ago, I did not confirm that match with you, so on my part I am very sorry, those that I contacted.

Anyway, I really hope we can all grow together in our love for this wonderful game. We are no longer joining Agape cup, but there might be another tournament thats not as strict and not as competitive as Agape. I'll let you know the details soon. That tournament starts end april. Till then, stay safe and play more soccer!!! :)

Good Match

Greetings!!
Just came back from the game against Hilmann's team. Though the final score was 1-1, I think the team played really well.

First and foremost, we welcome back our defender/striker Mr Jared Wu Jiancong from overseas, and we also welcome Gavin aboard the SSC team :)

Think it was a fairly even game, many chances created by both sides and both sides worked hard to keep the other away. On our end, Cong started the match with several blistering runs before feeling the effects of the Singapore heat and humidity. But even then Cong made sure his presence was felt as he shrugged off defenders to chase for through passes. Jiahao was playing along-side and his pace and agility always made it difficult for the opponent's defense. Helping us open up the game were our wingers Sean Tan and Kang Yang. Commanding the centre of midfield were Jurgen and Tany. Jurgen switching back to a preferred role as a midfielder and stationing himself in front of the defense. And helping to build a wall in front of our goalkeeper were, Jason at right back, Simon Lim in an unusual position as left back, Alvin Hoi and Chao at the heart of the defense. And in goal is the ever present and ever enthusiastic keeper, Edward. The first half ended in a stalemate, as both sides struggled to create chances.

The 2nd half started with more composure shown by the SSC team, as they tried to keep possession of play and pressuring the opponent's defense. With the introduction of Dinesh for Cong in the first half, Lionel for Alvin hoi, Gavin for Jason, and Eduard lee for Simon, team SSC sought to break the deadlock. An unfortunate accident brought an abrupt end to Gavin's debut 5 mins into his introduction, but we thank him all the same for his contributions.
The game looked to continue on in deadlock, as both teams defended tooth and nail to keep the ball out of the net, and with many mis-taken chances by both sides, the game looked to end in a draw. But the breakthrough finally came, when a foul was made on Team SSC at the half way line, and Team SSC poured players into the penalty area. Chao stepped up to launch the ball diagonally into the penalty box, many heads were seen as many jumped to try to get to the ball, but the ball seemed intent on missing everyone and bounced its way into the back of the net, 1-0 to team SSC. A freak accident, but as they say in football, A goal is a goal :)! Congratulations poured as everyone remembered a similar situation in a MWS tournament years ago. It's Chao's first goal in many many years haha. As the match continued on, SSC tried to press on for that second goal, yet trying to maintain a good solid defense. With Jiahao dropped into midfield to help Tany and Jurgen to crowd out the central area and win the ball, SSC managed to gain more control. Chao almost got his second of the match, but he failed to connect with a corner taken by Sean Tan. Simon almost made his mark when he broke through the opponent's defense and was through on goal on the right, but a freakish bounce at the very last moment before he shot, caused the ball to sail wide of the goal. Cong almost got into the score sheet as well, as he tried to clear a cross by the opponents, who sent the ball into the SSC penalty box, with the ball hitting Cong's boot and almost scrambling into the SSC net, only to be denied by the post. I must say this is one time Cong is relieved that he did not score. Pressure began to mount on the SSC defense as the opponents sought for the equalizer, and it finally came, with less than 5mins left in the game, an attack saw the opponents catching the SSC keeper off his line, and with an audacious attempt, he tried to chip the keeper, and it worked. 1-1!! With both sides in a cautious mood, the game ended in a stalemate at 1-1. Good game guys!!

GAME ON

We've got a game this coming Saturday, 21st February 2009. Opponents were arranged by one of the referees who was previously contacting Sebas, a Mr Tay. Venue is at Tampines Block 867A @ 9am. We'll be wearing our red jerseys. We're trying to rotate certain players so that we don't call down 20 players again, as many players will not get enough playing time. Thus, if you're interested in playing more matches, please do let me know and I'll try to call you down more often, it helps if you're playing either defender or goalkeeper, confirm need you one :) strikers and midfielder (unless you're a left midfielder) can join the queue haha. Whatever the position just let me know ya :)

I've decided to start a facebook group, a suggestion by Simon, because it would be easier to communicate, especially when there is a match/tournament/friendly, and all I need to do is create an event and send it out. Of course that means you guys gotta check your facebooks, which I'm sure many of you do. Even if you're like me, only logging into facebook only when I receive emails notifications, all I ask is that you login maybe every wednesday or thursday to see if anything is on. Therefore if by now you have not received an invite from me to join the group, please look for saturdaysoccerclub group on FB and ask for an invite, most likely because I have not added you on FB as a friend :P

Although the facebook group has been created, this blog WILL continue running. A blog is really nice to come to, at least for me, so I'll still post stuff, but I'll post on both ends. I've got Jurgen and Fae who've both graciously and generously offered time and effort to help spruce up the blogsite, but it will take time so please be patient.

Just to let you know, I've attended a meeting about a possible tournament, that runs from april to around september. The matches are on Sundays at 3pm and 5pm. Since YC service is in the afternoons, the committee have mentioned that they will try to make arrangements such that our games will all be on the 5pm slot, if we decide to participate. And the matches WILL NOT be every week. So in a month, we may have 2-3 sunday matches (depending on number of participating teams). $800 per team of 20-25 players, for the entire tournament. Each team will play (estimated) 9-10 games. It works out to about $4 per game, which is quite crazy. Anyway, more details when I find out more, and also I need to find players committed to play this tournament. Key word being COMMITTED!! I'll probably ask you guys on sunday after service, for those players not in KY, please do contact me if you are interested (can post on the chat box here or send an email or go on facebook).

Hey guys,
Thanks all for making the effort to come down. I think everyone had a good time, and I'm sure many would've loved to play alittle longer. We had a very good turn-out of 20 players. Although there were afew that lacked fitness, majority of you guys had sufficient stamina lasting for at least a half :). (We're not as old as we think :))

The score for the day was 6-3 in team Saturday Soccer Club's favour :D!! I can't really remember the scorers, I remember Sean Tan got our first goal, others that hit the target were, Dinesh, Simon, Eduard, did I miss out anyone? Our opponents, Team Trinity, made it tough for our attackers playing a high line and catching our players offside many-a-times, but it was also in my opinion cost them many goals. Whenever our attackers were not called offside, they'd be off in a flash and made it difficult for their defenders to catch up, allowing our attackers to slot home past the stranded keeper.

The first half saw some solid defending from our make-shift defender, Ling Jiahao (cause our original center backs were late :p) and Alvin Hoi, ending the 1st half at 2-0. Goals coming from Sean Tan and Dinesh in fine fashion.
The second half saw an over-haul in the team as 9 players were substituted. With original defenders, Chao and Jurgen at the heart of the defence. The lack of fitness and match awareness showed from the 2 center backs as some slack defending allowed Team Trinity to squeeze 3 goals past our otherwise brilliant keeper Benjamin Fong. But there were moments of fine plays and touches from the 2 defenders to their credit (^.^) Today's match also welcomes our debut players to team SSC, Dinesh, Kang Yang and Jeremy Yap.

All in all, it was a really good match, and many enjoyed themselves. There was however 1 casualty, in our mazy dribbling midfielder Luke Tang. Terrorizing the opponents in the heart of the midfield with his silky skills made him a player to be taken noticed of, and in an attempt to stop him, an accidental tackle caused Luke to tumble to the ground, clutching his ankle in agonizing pain.

MATCH is ON!!! Saturday 24th January 2009 @ 10am. We will be playing against Trinity Christian Centre in a friendly match :) Details have yet to be confirmed as I am waiting for their contact person to send me the venue details etc. They will book the referee and field and all we have to do is show up and pay of course, heh!

I am not sure how good they are, although I think they were in the same MWS tournament as us last year. Anyway, I've already got 13 players, but I'm hoping to get more, reason being, think maybe 11 out of 13 of us (or maybe 13/13) have not touched a soccer ball in more than 6 months!!!! And alot of us are unfit, thus we may need to sub every 5mins or so! Haha, ok maybe I'm exaggerating, but we are mostly an unfit bunch. Thus more players the better :) hehe. If you have not received an SMS from me about the match or about this saturday 17th January 2009 kick-a-bout, please leave a shout-out here or contact me, or Shawn or Derek (depending on who you know in the team) to contact me.

As mentioned above, this saturday 17th Jan @ 10am, we're going to NUS to play abit of soccer. Preferably playing on the field so we can dust off our boots and check that they are still usable :) BUT do bring along a pair of court shoes, we might play at the futsol court in the event of unavailability of field or some other reason. Also if you have a football at home, PLEASE bring, more footballs the better. Do take note on 17th that it is NOT a match, but I hope all who are playing on the 24th can come down, because all of us havnt been playing, so it would be good for us to come down and have alittle kick-around. Helloooo...
Not sure how many of you guys still come to the blog to check out whats happening and all, although there hasn't been much going on >.<

Attendance for soccer at turf city on our side hasn't been too good. I've been hoping for at least a good team of 7-8 players to play consistently together to get something going, but unfortunately due to other commitments (IE: work; classes; injuries etc), we have not been able to do so. Really want to thank Derek for helping us call people down to make up the numbers for us. I do understand that we all have other commitments outside, but if possible I would ask that those interested to play soccer, commit to coming down to play soccer every saturday from 12.30pm - 14.30pm (please call me if you're interested to come down).
I really miss the days in school where we play soccer everyday. Thats why I really want to play on saturdays now, because there really isn't any other time that we do get to play. I'm sure many of you miss it too, so come and kick some balls.

We are Quarter-Finalists

Hello everyone :)
Just came back from the MWS Soccer Tournament, and as most of you would have probably heard already, we got knocked out in the quarter finals through penalties, yes our team's bane.

We started out pretty shakey, as alot of us never really played with one another before, we lost the first match against "Pentecost Panthers" 0-1.
We regained some composure to win our 2nd match against "Faith MC" 1-0.
After a pretty long break for lunch and some matches in between, we fought well against team "CMIA", who are also the sponsor's team that participated, that ended in a stalemate, 0-0.
The next 2 games we played were to our surprise, back-to-back. Immediately after playing "Christ Commets", in which we won 2-1, we had to go onto another pitch to play against "PLMC youth". Fortunately we got ourselves settled fast and controlled the game well, we ended up winning by 4-0.
Our last 2 matches were against probably the stronger teams in our group, "Fairfield MC" and "Aldersgate MC", but we fought hard and gave it our best performances, and ended up winning 1-0 and 2-0 respectively.
All in all we won 5 games, drew 1, lost 1, with a goal difference of 8. We scored 10 goals and let in 2 goals.
Into the Quarter Finals we went as leaders of the group, and we faced up against "Pentecost Pandas". We played our hearts out and dominated the game, but our finishing was lacking. Thus we went into penalties, 3 to be taken before sudden-death penalty. Garret stepped up to slot home the equalizer after the opponents scored theirs. Our hearts cheered as our brilliant shot-stopping keeper Ben Fong saved their second, and up stepped Derek Ong, our power driver, and he did power drive it... over the bar. They scored their third, Daniel replied for us in kind. SUDDEN DEATH PENALTIES!!! *Drum rolls* GOAL as the opponents made theirs. And up stepped the captain, yours truly, to take the spot kick. As usual, I went for the blast shot, with the aim of keeping the shot low and not balloon it, and I did keep it low and on target, but only to shoot it right about the goal-keeper at his chest level. HAIZZZ!!!! Thus, the bane of SSC, shooting and penalties.

But truly I would like to thank all those who came to play with us and helped us get to where we did. Quarter-finals may not be as good as medal winners, but the way the team played, communicated, helped each other and listen to one another, was really phenomenal.

In defense, working tirelessly and chasing every ball and player, Andry, Pravin and Jason.
Our absolutely solid Defensive midfielders, Derek Ong and Falzi (I hope I spelt it right, please correct me if I'm wrong). They were really solid and helped the defense and also distributed the ball.
In midfield and wingers, Shaun Teo, John, Garrett, Daniel and Simon Lim. Out-running many of the opposition and creating space and linking up the midfield and strikers.
Our target men in front, Shawn Kong and Sherman. They held up the ball really well and their vision to spread the play to the wings were really great. Not to mention of course the goals scored.
Unfortunately I did not keep a record of who our scorers were, but overall Well Done Team!!

Once again thanks to everyone who came to help us play, also to the SSC members who couldn't play but informed me in advance so that we can find other players. Also thanks be to God for the good weather today, at most times of the day it was fairly cloudy.
Well SSC, lets look forward to the next game, or tournament. We still play at turf city weekly, but please do inform me if you are interested to come, as we're playing in teams of 7. But please do come join us.

Latest on MWS Soccer Tournament

1. The Tournament will be held on Saturday, 6 September 2008 from 8.30am to 6pm at AR-JAS Sports Centre (600 West Coast Road).

2. Event is strictly NON-SMOKING and please do not litter in the premise. Each team to be issued trash bags during registration.

3. Team captains / Managers are to register their teams between 8.30am – 9am. Please submit photocopies of your players’ identity cards to staff on duty during registration. Payment of registration fees can be done during registration.

4. Teams are kindly requested to attend the opening ceremony.

5. There will be a total of 15 players per team comprising nine players and six reserves. Each team will play with eight outfield players and one goalkeeper.

6. Format of play for will be Round Robin with the top four teams in each group advancing to the knock-out stages. In the event of teams having the same point’s total; the team with the better scoring aggregate will advance.

7. Please note that in cases of walk-over, the team present will be awarded a 3 – 0 win.

8. In the knock out stages, there will be NO extra time. In the event of a tie after the stipulated playing time, there will be a penalty shoot out to determine the winner. 3 penalty kicks for each side and if score is still tied; sudden death shoot out. In the event of a penalty shoot out for any of the Q-finals or Semi-finals, the timing for the next match will be postponed by 10mins.

9. Champions will be presented the CMIA CUP (Challenge Trophy), top three teams will be presented with medals.

10. Substitutions during a match are unlimited but once substituted, the player cannot return to the match.

11. Bibs are available but kindly return after use.

12. Tournament will be played in accordance with FIFA rules except offside rule. Offensive language used will be punished with yellow cards.

13. Managers / Captains are to be responsible for the discipline of his/her charges on and off the playing field. Any damages to the property due to the charger’s action will be accorded to the respective Manager / Captain for action. This will include any compensation arising.

14. All players must be properly attired with soccer boots, shin guards and with jerseys (numbered) tucked in.

15. Decisions of the match officials and organizer are final and we reserve the right to disqualify any player and/or team for unruly conduct in or outside the match area.

16. Foods are on sale during the event. All proceeds will go towards supporting our programmes and services.

17. All games are 20mins long and will only consist of 1 half.

URGENT: MWS Charity Soccer Tournament

VERY URGENT ANNOUNCEMENT!!!

As you can see from the heading, we are able to join the MWS tournament again this year. It is being held at Ayer Raja-JAS Sports Complex, $300 for team of 15, on the 6 September 2008.
The closing date for registration has actually already past quite awhile ago on the 15th of August, but the contact person, Mr David Tan, has graciously allowed our late registration.
THUS, I will need 15 players who want and are able to play on the 6th of September 2008. It will be on a Saturday, probably from morning (registration should be at 8am if I'm not mistaken) till whatever time (depending on far we go), based on past experiences, final match is usually around 5+ to 6pm. I'm not sure how many teams there are this year, but there is a Captains briefing this coming friday, I will probably know more details then.
But right now, those who want, can and interested to play, please call/sms/email me ASAP!!! This is VERY URGENT as I need to register the team ASAP and the tournament is NEXT WEEK. And I can only register 15 players, which will need to include Goalkeepers and defenders, I know we've got abundance of midfielders and strikers hehe. But doesnt matter what position you play, just contact me and I'll see who we can bring for the tournament. Help me ask around because I dont have the contact list to call people!!

Indoor soccer at turf city

Hello, as those of you who've been coming to the blog to read about what's been going on, we've been going to turf city to play astro turf soccer, 7 a-side. This is tentatively the on-going saturday soccer as I'm not too sure if we have enough to play field soccer as yet.
If anyone who hasn't been to the pitch at turf city and would like to join us, please do let me know. If you've got my contact number just sms or call me, or post on the chat box by the side :D

The plan of having soccer on tuesday nights have been postponed indefinately, reasons being we do not have enough people free to play on tuesday nights. So until then we'll stick to saturday soccer. So far we have not exactly done any trainings either, we've been mostly just playing 7a-sides to gain back match fitness, and its been great fun. So come join us if you can!!

Saturday soccer at Turf City

Hello everyone,
Its been 2 weeks since we started playing soccer at turf city, and I think we will be doing it for awhile until a training program can be drawn up for saturdays. More importantly I need to know who can commit to playing soccer on saturday mornings. Thus far I've got about maybe 8-9 players who can commit to try coming on saturdays, would love to see more people coming.
After playing soccer for the past 2 weeks, I see alot of our rustyness showing, especially in terms of passing and ball control, but we're getting our match fitness back.
Also want to take this opportunity to thank Derek for arranging the 7-aside soccer at turf city so far. For this saturday we'll still be playing the 7-aside, unless something comes up :D The timing is currently fixed from 12pm-2pm. Please check back at least on friday again to see if any changes have been made.
Keep an ear out for tuesday night cage as well. Its not confirmed as yet but we're thinking about it, so check in on the blog for more details, I'll let you guys know when things are confirmed.

Kick-a-bout changed venue

Hi everyone, sorry for the almost last minute change, but I've decided to change the venue from NUS to TURF CITY 7 a-side astro turf pitch instead, at 12 noon to 2pm, it is a sheltered pitch like the other cages. There's goal posts and all which will be alot more fun than picking up balls far away after kicking at NUS. Plus astro turf means you can still wear your boots to play. Location has been posted before in an earlier post below, check out www.thepitch.com.

And once again, please do help me pass the word around to all the soccer guys to come back to the site and post replies, because I have no idea who's coming to play etc and its extremely tough to call and find 11+ people every week, at least then I'll know who can come etc. Really appreciate all the help I can get.

Just came back from soccer at turf city. The setup is like the other cages, but they've got 7 a-side pitches as well. It really wasn't too bad, and it's relatively closer to town compared to the east coast and the one near NTU.

There's gonna be an indoor court soccer going on THIS SATURDAY 19 July 2008 @ 12am @ turf city. Kindly arranged by Pravo, Cheeks, Derek and co.
I am not sure exactly where the indoor court is though, the information I have is once you reach turf city, just before entering the car park, there is a small lane on the right, go through that and there should be some shops selling flowers and stuff. If you have no idea where whatsoever, just park at turf city and call the guys above or call me.

Greetings everyone!

First up, just wanna thank Bas for continually keeping this club alive and kicking.
Also want to wish Shawn an eventful journey in his NS life.

Well I'm not the most fantastic organizer, but I do love the game of soccer and I'm sure most or all of you do too. I would really want to make soccer a regular sport in my week, I've spoken to afew people and they too would like to have regular playing day(s). Nothing has been confirmed, but I would like to continue our saturday morning kick-a-rounds, as well as maybe a weeknight game, most likely streetsoccer or cage.
The weeknight soccer action is really for everyone to have fun and make some new friends, its also a great opportunity for our working buddies to bring their fellow colleagues to have a fun game of soccer after a hard day's work. Day hasn't been set yet but we're thinking tuesday, it is however not confirmed as yet.
Saturday soccer is also fun :) but I am hoping to also incorporate some training into the club aside from our normal once-in-awhile matches. I know we've tried it before, and it did not turn out too well, especially since none of us are proper coaches. But I hope you can give me your support in this and help start it off, it will take time for the people handling the training to get a hang of making full use of the time.

Alot of news, and I would need everyone to chip in effort to help build our beloved soccer club.
1. Please help spread the word about the blogsite again, I will try my best to update as often as possible, especially when we've games or updates and kick-a-rounds etc.
2. Commitment to help our soccer community grow and come for trainings! I am hoping to invite younger ones to join us in training and in games, yes even in games. I would really like for us to not only improve our own game, but to train the younger ones as well. So even if they do not know how to kick, we teach them :)
As for the older ones and those that have been playing awhile, I am hoping we can train on playing as a team instead of being good individually, which is why I hope everyone can come for trainings. If we don't train with one another, its hard to know how each individual plays. By the way, training also means we're gonna start working on fitness. I know I'm probably the least fit, but hey we gotta start somewhere, can't exactly always finish a game getting heat exhaustion right? haha.
3. We can't have training without coaches right? And since none of us (at least that I know of) have a coaching license, I am looking for anyone who has some knowledge, be it from being in the school team or maybe played for clubs before etc, to let me know if he/she is interested in helping provide some techniques or some sorta training program etc.
4. Lobang for:
-fields (free fields for training is preferred, NUS is currently the only one I know of)
-opponents
-referees

The list is endless but I don't want to get ahead of myself. I believe once these few things are settled, we can follow-up on other things.

Finally, I would like to start our saturday kick-a-rounds on 26 July 2008, 9am at the NUS open field. Please bring boots and shoes, in case we cannot use the field for whatever reason, we'll use the streetsoccer court instead. If anyone knows of any free field we can use on saturday morning, please do let me know. Help me spread the word around, to the younger ones too. Please bring a ball if you can. The more balls we have, the easier to do some kicking practice. Bring water as well.
I will update here if there are any change in plans.

Good evening once again boys, I know it has been a rough past few weeks for the team. The weather has been quite bad and I apologise for not providing enough games. However, we will have football soon, be it "cage", fico" or everton park.

Once again, we see another warrior from the SSC clan leave the country.
Pravin Menon (pravo mano) will be leaving tonight for Barcelona to continue his education.
For those who want to send him off, he will be checking in at 9pm. Call someone to ask which terminal it is, I'm really not too sure. Not terminal 3, that I'm very sure.

So, since Prav-man is leaving tonight, it is more or less a tradition to send him off with a testimonial match.
Our match was against MDIS school team (if I'm not wrong). Great weather, great football, great team mates. Final score 1-1.

The day starts with the stadium chanting "theres only one pravo, theres only one pravo, pravo!"
Pravin plays strike with Justin and Sean tan by his side with a 4-3-3 formation. Ever present Pravo troubles the defence with his presence and aura almost potting in his first goal for SSC. Great play up front and superb defending resulted in a 1-0 lead to SSC at the break.
Maybe it was the water or 100plus, when the 2nd half started, SSC switched off for a bit and found the opponents netting the equaliser. And it began, attacking football throughout from both sides. However, neither side could find the net. Oh well, final score 1-1.

I would say we had a great game, playing good football as well as having fun with each other.
We really played as one unit, good stuff guys.
And on the behalf of SSC, we would like to say thank you pravo for your contribution to the team. God loves you, and so does SSC.

Hearts and a nose where broken on 1st September, MWS tournament 2007, as SSC came in 4th placing.

Fantastic weather provided by the Man Himself, God. Thank you God for that.
A nice cool sunny morning kicked us off.
Cut the story short, SSC came in top of the table with 12 points. Shaun Teo breaking his nose in the third game. A huge tall french men attempted a scissor kick while brave Shaun Teo headed the ball away only to find his nose in contact with the french men's boot, and POOOOM went his nose.
Brave soldiers we have here.

3rd/4th - lost

There it is, SSC lost a hard fought battle in a penalty shootout. Penalty shootout soon became sudden death penalty shootout, and "shawn da bomb" got diffused.
I apologise for letting you guys down.

This team has fantastic players, all playing with character and heart.

It's a 9 a-side tournament, so we'll be playing an unfamiliar formation. I seriously encourage those playing to attend this training session because it would be good to let you familiarise with the formation and clear some rust out.

4th August 2007.

In the nice cool morning, 0930 at Everton Park, 17 brave warriors stood against Team Buffalo United. And these 17 warriors fought with heart and came out victorious.
1-0 to SSC.
Thank you God for the nice weather that was provided on Saturday, couldn't ask for more.

1st half. Team SSC showed great organisation despite the lack of game time over the past few weeks. We closed them down quick and pressured them well in the opening minutes of the half. It didn't take long before a superb lobbing thru-pass by Derek found Ling Jia Hao one on one with the keeper. With much experience and skill, Jia Hao lofts the ball pass the keeper, giving SSC the lead. Derek smashes a great chance away from a free kick taken by Justin Tay. Constant thru balls by Tany and Derek continued to pressure our opponents. Team Buffalo United had their chances, but superb defending and brave keeping made sure they did not equalise.

2nd half. A little shaky start, but got organised quick and started attacking. Captain Shawn being guilty for missing two glorious chances. Xiangkers with a pin point cross, but only to let Shawn head it wide. Tiredness kicked in and Team Buffalo United made full use of it, creating more chances and shooting. However, superb defending once again by Andriy, Pravin, Shaun Teo, Jeremy Kwok, Xiangkers and Chao kept us our lead. Chao care-bear starred one of the opponents, knocking the wind out of him and that was pretty funny. Hope you're alright Leon. Team Buffalo didn't let us rest one bit, throwing attacks after attacks. They were unfortunate, hitting the post twice. But Ben Fong-ster, who made brilliant (really good, superb, out of this world) saves kept as alive.
SSC hang on and came out victors.
To Team Buffalo United, you guys were great. A good match played, and hopefully we meet again. Thanks.

I have to say, this match showed me how much you guys love football and the team. Playing from the heart, that inspires me. Thank you guys for playing.
And we also say "See you soon" to Simon Lim, who went back to Australia (studies) on 4th August. We as a team, Will see you soon. Take care and Study hard.

Besides the score, as a team we really enjoyed ourselves out there, just that the sun was a killer. Keep it up guys, you guys are playing well. As for me, I've got to work on my fitness, and so do some of you guys.

Overall, well controlled game, played with discipline, really proud of you guys for that. Missed a few chances but it's all good, theres always next time.

Good Morning/ Afternoon/ Evening Ladies and Gentlemen of this humble club, I am here to announce the closing of Saturday Soccer Club, thanks for all your support and participation.

Ok, that was quite a bad joke, i'm sorry. But I BET I FOOLED SOME OF YOU GUYS! easy up boys, but i do have news for you. As school starts and school exams coming and blah blah and give bAs and me a little break from organising stuff, SSC would be taking a break for about 3 weeks, something like an off-season thing. Fear not, i guarantee that SSC will be back in business in no time.

Other news. Chris Edwards, or better known as Chris, or the Caucasian DM in our team, or the guy that tackles really well, is going back to the United States for good this Saturday (12th May). His flight is at 9pm and those of you who are keen on sending him off, please be at the airport at 7pm. His flight number is SQ516 at terminal 2. I should be there, bAs would be there, so yeah try to make it down and give our warrior a good sending off.

The score today was 4-2 in the favour of SSC. Superbly finished goals came from Elfie, Shawn, Sean and Alfred.

But seriously, besides the win, we all had a super good time. didn't we boys?
I'm sure somewhere along the line God said "LET THERE BE FOOTBALL."
And indeed there was.
We would like to thank God for not bringing down the rain so that His beloved little children could enjoy the wonderful game He created.

Many significant events happened this lovely afternoon.

Jeremy Kwok was handed the number 2 jersey for SSC. You've earned it mate.

Elfie scores on his belated birthday match which is also his second goal for SSC. Fantastic.

(uncle) Alfred celebrates his 40++ birthday afternoon today with SSC and scores! first for the team, and what a day to score it on. What a player. May God bless you on this special day and many other days to come. cheers.

Tany is another birthday boy (man) who turns 24 today. He celebrates his birthday afternoon with SSC along side (uncle) Alfred. He didn't score but came really close. There's always next week. And may God bless you too on this special day and many other days to come. cheers.

Dear God, I would like to Thank You for supplying us with opponents and with sufficient players for our team and with good weather. Amen.

Ok, so today we were missing quite a number of regular players so our second team had to step up with a mixture of other people from different places.

So the starting line up went like this

*beeeeep* or *weeeeeeet* or whatever you want that sounds like the referee's whistle.
And it began.
SSC didn't have a good start, mainly because most of us were playing with unfamiliar people.
The half got worse as SSC went down by 2 goals. Not a very good sign.

Second half started with Eduard coming in for Luke Tang, Sean Tan taking over Elfie in strike, Chén going into the left side of the field, Matthew in for Jason, Luke for Lionel and Chao came in for Alfred. (obviously, more subs were made during the game)

So SSC suddenly had fire and desire to win and we gave it all. With limited subs, all of us had to put in 100000% cause not all of us are fit (to be honest)(no offence though)(haha)
And 'lo and behold, madness performance by every individual, superb play and SSC came back from zisahfajkhasnistan island and took the lead. 3-2 it was.
But not for long, a late goal was scored by the opponents and thats how the game ended.
Final score 3-3.

I would like to specially thank Desmond, Wei Yu and Kenny for joining us today, you guys played well.
Nice keeping, Great defence , superb midfielding and power strike guys. To me, SSC was the man of the match. Hope you guys had fun.

Match Report 10.03.07

Once again, Everton park was the battleground. The sun was at her very best this afternoon draining our energy. The game started brilliantly for us with an early goal scored by Cheeky Chan latching on to a long ball by someone (great pass "someone") then shooting into the bottom corner. Miscommunication amongst the defence lead to our opponents equalizer. Hot afternoons leads to heated games, and today was no exception. A scuffle broke out but was quickly settled by the ref who had a superb game, showing authority with his whistle (great job "Ref"). SSC had good linkups with the strikers and mid fielders and we had continuous attack, however the captain (someone) just couldn't find the net in a few occasions, he sure wasn't a happy puppy. A lack of communication and a mix up in the penalty box lead to the opponents scoring a second goal. SCC went into halftime trailing 2-1.

The second half started. SSC played a superb midfield game with Derek's surprising work rate and Tany's creativity both showing great determination to win the ball and with the wings doing what they do best, not forgetting Chad with attacking options. SSC got into the game with the defence tightening up and working as a unit (great job defence). However, a corner was sent in and an unfortunate bounce resulted into an unfortunate own goal.

Hope was restored with great link up by SSC. One-two play between Tany and Chen then found its way to Shawn Kong who turned away from the defender and gave a sublime through pass (to make up for his misses) to Cheeky who beat the keeper at the near post.Time ran out for SSC and the game ended 3-2 to the opponents.

Frankly i thought a very good game was played by the team. The opponents rarely tested Eddie but our errors gifted them with their goals. Man of the match goes to Derek Ong who surprised us all by running and controlling the midfield, what a player!

To all out there! This week i hope we'll continue where we have left off last week. Winning! haha, I decided to arrange a game cuz Cheeky is still in town, so i thought might as well play! (its not another testimonial thou, he had one already heh heh). Anyway i've put out a few challenges to various teams. One of which is Innova Junior College's school team. (thanks Krystal! she thinks they kinda suck haha!) Other than that i've also asked the ref (yes, mr Experience) to try to find us a team to play against. Game is on at the same time 11am @ Everton Park. Warm ups begin 45 min earlier at 1015! IF YOU COME LATE YOU DONT START! We should be in Red, will update when i confirm the opponents jersey colour. Next week we'll try to have a training session at MDIS, but there might be a possiblity of a game too. Its either that or we all go play at the cage. Match Report 240207

The match today started with the white team pressing the SSC with their pace and direct balls through the middle. There wasn't much goal mouth action with their defense holding out surprisingly well against our attack. With their midfield gaining a slight advantage in the middle, we were on the back foot for some periods the game. The break through came in the 20 plus minute when Jiahao found some space on the left after a cross field pass from Kwok and worked his way into the penalty box. Shrugging off 2 challenges he managed to squeeze a shot in for a goal. Almost immediately the opposing team hit back with a quick break again, with their striker rounding Jeremy but unable to hit the target. Sloppy defending by the SSC gave the opponents a few more good opportunities to score but they were either unable to hit the target or denied by Jeremy who was proving hard to beat. The first half ended 1-0 to the SSC.

With the substitutes coming in the second half, the team managed to limit the passing and attacks from team white. With John standing strong in the middle of the defense the opponents rarely got a shot in on goal. And even if they managed to squeeze through an opening, the ever present Jeremy was there to protect our lead. About 15 minutes into the second half we got another goal through Cheeky. A long punt from Jeremy was not dealt with by the opposing defense and Cheeky managed to sneak in a shot that beat the keeper to give us a 2 goal cushion. The subs were doing well in keeping out with team white's advances and controlled the game pretty well. They fashioned a couple more chances with some good wing play by Chen and Daryl but failed to convert. SSC then rode out the match without much fuss. Match ended 2-0 to SSC! well done lads!!

Man of the Match award goes to Jeremy Chua. He was a contant thorn in the opponents attack with his superb angle covering and never-say-die attitude. Quick out of the box, commanding in it and always putting his body on the line, he was the main reason why we kept a clean sheet. Well played!!

Sorry for this late post... but the team we're supposed to play against this sat has just backed out... citing that they dont have enough people to have a game. due to the last minute nature of this problem, i'm appealing to all members who have contacts to ask if they want to play this sat. game is 11am at everton park, we'll be in red and the total cost for pitch and ref is 80 bucks per team. We might have to pay the fella if we dont get a team cuz he reserved the field for us. I urge everyone to try our hardest to make this happen yea? Sorry guys.

Hey guys,

I know we've had quite a few testimonials lately, but this week is probably the last one we'll have for awhile. Simon will be leaving on Monday and will be continuing his 'training' over in perth with James and co. So this week the game is on at Everton Park, 1045am kick off with warm ups starting at 10am. Team jersey colour is red. We're playing against an unknown team now after FCC played us out.
Once again i must stress that punctuality is IMPORTANT! And if for some reason you cannot make it, please inform me at least 12 hours before hand so i can try to make replacements, unless of course its a last minute emergency.
